- A Protection Visa (Class XA) (Subclass 866) is the only permanent refugee visa you can apply for if you are already in Australia.
- This visa may be available if you arrived in Australia legally which means you arrived with a valid visa.
- You must also meet the definition of a ‘refugee’.
- Even if you do not personally satisfy the criteria you may be eligible for the protection visa if a family member engages Australia’s protection obligations.
- Protection visas allow you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident.
- You will have access to Australian social security (welfare) and health care support.
- However you will not be allowed to travel to your home country or the country from which you fled.
