    14. How To Apply For Citizenship
  • Fill out the application form either online or on paper. For the General Eligibility form visit: https://www.ecom.immi.gov.au/citz/applyNow.do?form=1300t. For the Other Situations form visit: https://www.ecom.immi.gov.au/citz/applyNow.do?form=1290.
  • Attach documents to your application that prove your identity, establish that you are of good character and any other required documents to support your application. See the following link for the Department’s document checklist: http://www.citizenship.gov.au/applying/files/pid_docs/conferral_checklist/
  • You will be invited by letter to attend an interview. Your original documents will be inspected at the interview so make sure you bring these along.
  • If you are between 18 and 59 years of age you will usually have to take a citizenship test. If you do not have to sit the test you may have to attend a citizenship interview. At the interview the Department will assess whether you have a basic knowledge of English and understand what Australian citizenship means.
  • The Department will notify you of its decision.
  • You must attend a citizenship ceremony and make the Australian Citizenship Pledge. This usually occurs within six months from the approval of your application.
