14. How To Apply For Citizenship

- Fill out the application form either online or on paper. For the General Eligibility form visit: https://www.ecom.immi.gov.au/citz/applyNow.do?form=1300t. For the Other Situations form visit: https://www.ecom.immi.gov.au/citz/applyNow.do?form=1290.
- Attach documents to your application that prove your identity, establish that you are of good character and any other required documents to support your application. - You will be invited by letter to attend an interview. Your original documents will be inspected at the interview so make sure you bring these along.
- If you are between 18 and 59 years of age you will usually have to take a citizenship test. If you do not have to sit the test you may have to attend a citizenship interview. At the interview the Department will assess whether you have a basic knowledge of English and understand what Australian citizenship means.
- The Department will notify you of its decision.
- You must attend a citizenship ceremony and make the Australian Citizenship Pledge. This usually occurs within six months from the approval of your application.
