Fraud and deception offences relate to circumstances where a person is dishonest or deceptive for financial or other personal gain. It is a wide-ranging area of criminal law and applies to many types of offences.
In some states and territories fraud offences are called ‘fraud’. In others they are known as ‘deception offences’. There is a lot of overlap between offences relating to fraudulent conduct. Police may charge a person with theft where the behaviour could also have amounted to obtaining property by deception.

Behaviour such as offensive language, drinking alcohol or damaging property in public places is not acceptable in our society. Public order offences allow the police to control this kind of behaviour by issuing move-on orders, on-the-spot fines and in some circumstances criminal prosecution. It is a good idea to know what powers the police have to deal with unacceptable behaviour, the kinds of behaviour that can get you in trouble and what you should do if you receive a fine, order or charge.
