A lawyer must be a ‘registered migration agent’ in order to provide immigration and refugee advice. These specialist lawyers can:
- advise you on which visa best suits your situation;
- assist you in making a visa or citizenship application;
- liaise with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection on your behalf during and after the application process;
- apply for a review of a decision made by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection;
- represent you in any appeal to the Refugee Review Tribunal; and
- initiate proceedings in the Federal Circuit Court of Australia and represent you in those proceedings if your appeal to the Refugee Review Tribunal is unsuccessful.
