Your privacy is important to us.

This Privacy Policy was prepared on 18 March 2015. We reserve the right to revise and update it from time to time by publishing the updated version on this website.

LegalEagle™ cares about your privacy. Any information we collect from you is stored securely and handled sensitively. We do not sell your information or provide it to anyone else without your consent, except under the limited circumstances outlined below.

LegalEagle™ complies with the Australian Privacy Principles contained in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). This Privacy Policy describes the kind of information we collect and why. It also provides information about how we collect, store, use and disclose information about you.

The personal information we collect and why.

LegalEagle™ provides a range of services designed to assist you with your legal questions and problems. In the course of providing these services we will collect information generated or provided by you while using our website, the services offered or otherwise dealing with us. This will include personal information.

The Privacy Act defines personal information as information or an opinion about you that discloses your identity or from which your identity can reasonably be discovered. This information includes names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, banking and credit card details and other official identification numbers.

Please note that information contained in a publicly available publication is not personal information and we are unable to protect it. This includes certain of the information as specified that you post in publically accessible databases or forums such as our Ask a Lawyer service.

When you visit our website, information about your visit is automatically collected through cookies, Google Analytics and other visitor tracking services. We may gather information generated through your use of social media links such as shares, likes, tweets and pins. This automated data is not collected to identify individual users but to assist us in improving your online experience, the usage of our site and the functionality of our services. We may use this information within our organisation in ways that further these purposes including compiling and correlating the information gathered. You can choose to opt out by configuring your browser to disallow or refuse to accept cookies although this will compromise your ability to make full use of our services.

LegalEagle™ offers a range of free and paid membership services. We will ask you to provide us with personal information including the following if you take advantage of these services. 

When using our Phone a Lawyer and Fixed Fee Quote and Tender services it is important that you provide your real name, the other parties’ names, the name of any other companies or entities involved and any aliases or pseudonyms you are commonly known by. This is to allow the lawyers we contact on your behalf to conduct proper conflict of interest checks and ensure they are able to assist you.

Some of the services offered by LegalEagle™ require a payment or subscription. When you use these services we will request any personal information necessary to effect payment. Your credit card details are obtained and held securely by a specialist online service, SecurePay. LegalEagle™ does not have access to your credit card details.

We retain records of information provided by users of our services. This information is stored securely as outlined below.

Your personal information is stored securely.

Information provided to LegalEagle™ will be stored in a combination of a secure Microsoft Azure data centre (cloud) environment using high grade encryption and on LegalEagle’s own secure servers.

Only LegalEagle’s™ staff and service contractors have access to the data. LegalEagle™ takes security and risk management seriously and has in place appropriate internal policies and procedures to safeguard your personal information from unauthorised access, misuse, modification or disclosure.

Even with the strongest safeguards in place no system can be fully secured from all unlawful acts including theft and misuse of data. We are unable to and do not warrant that our system will not be subject to unlawful attacks. You may use our site only on condition that you accept that LegalEagle™ is not liable in the event of being subject to unlawful theft or misuse of the information you provide.

We will not share your personal information with third parties unless required to by law.

Except as described LegalEagle™ will not share your personal information with third parties unless required to do so by law.

Please note that while LegalEagle™ will not disclose your information overseas the information stored on Microsoft servers may be duplicated and stored as a backup on servers in another country.

LegalEagle™ provides links to third party websites including those of lawyers and law firms. Links to these websites does not mean LegalEagle has any affiliation with, sponsors, endorses or approves of these websites.

To ensure that your personal information is maintained securely we will require you to provide proof of your identity before allowing access or making changes to your personal information. This is for your own safety. We will endeavour to handle all requests for personal information within a reasonable time.

If you have a complaint about the way in which we have handled your personal information or any breach of your privacy by LegalEagle™ please provide details to our Privacy Officer. You should expect to receive a response within 30 days. If the dispute cannot be settled to the satisfaction of both parties within 3 months, LegalEagle™ may propose alternative dispute resolution. If the dispute remains unsatisfied you can make a formal complaint to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
