RRoad Transport & Accidents Lawoad transport plays an important part in our lives. There are many different types of road users including cyclists, private vehicles, trucks, farm machinery and road trains. All of these must work together to ensure that the roads are a safe place for everyone. This includes making sure that everyone who is operating a vehicle on our roads is properly licensed and aware of the operation of road rules.

All vehicles including trailers, caravans and motorcycles that are driven or towed are required by law to be registered. Driving an unregistered vehicle is dangerous for yourself, your passengers and other road users. It is also illegal.

There are a number of road rules providing guidance on how to operate a vehicle safely. There are restrictions about the consumption of alcohol and other intoxicating substances whilst you are driving. There are also rules and regulations covering seat belt use, where children are able to sit and how they are to be restrained when travelling in vehicles.

Of particular note is the fact that drivers of unregistered vehicles will not be covered under the compulsory third party insurance. This means that in the event of an accident they may have to pay the other party and their passengers’ compensation personally for any injuries that are sustained.

The demerit points system operates nationally and involves the allocation of demerit points to a driver who commits a road offence. By doing this the authorities aim to deter road users from driving incorrectly and encourage safe and responsible driving. The demerit points system provides a strong incentive to people to drive within the law.
