    18. Physical & Mental Wellbeing
  • The physical and mental health of veterans and their families is a strong focus of Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). An extensive range of services, activities and initiatives exist which aim to enhance the health and wellbeing of participants.
  • You may wish to consider the following:
    • joining special interest or hobby clubs such as lawn bowls, gardening or chess clubs;
    • volunteering;
    • joining a day club that provides social and recreational activities for veterans, their spouses and other members of the ex-service community. The day clubs operate with some support from the DVA but are typically sponsored by an ex-service organisation;
    • joining an exercise class or exercise group;
    • setting aside at least 30 minutes per day for physical activity.
    • enrolling in the DVA’s Heart Health Programme which is a 52 week programme aimed at improving participants’ physical health and wellbeing by encouraging better exercise habits, nutrition and lifestyle management;
    • utilising the Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service (VVCS), a free and confidential counselling and support service for those with service-related mental health conditions;
    • browsing the DVA’s ‘At Ease’ online portal; and
    • joining the Australian Men’s Shed Association which provides meeting places where men can find social support through more than 1,000 sheds representing approximately 175,000 individuals.
  • Maintaining good physical and mental wellbeing is important. If you would like to know more about how you can improve your physical and mental health you should make an appointment with your GP.
