    10. Skilled Migrant Application
  • You must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the SkillSelect program to apply for a Skilled Migrant visa. This can be submitted online through the Department of Immigration’s website.
  • The EOI is valid for 2 years from the date of submission.
  • Provide some basic information including:
    •  your name and address;
    •  your nominated occupation (which has to be from a list of approved occupations);
    •  work experience;
    •  education qualifications;
    •  level of English;
    •  skills assessment details; and
    •  any other relevant work business experience.
  • An invitation from the Department of Immigration will be sent to you if your EOI is successful. This allows you to apply for the appropriate visa.
  • You must apply for a visa within 60 days of receiving your invitation to submit a visa application.
  • Ensure that you have all your relevant supporting documents prepared in advance in order to meet the 60-day timeframe.
  • Depending on the visa that you apply for you may be given a list of conditions which you have to meet in order to comply with the visa requirement. Normally a provisional form of the visa will be given.
  • For example the Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457) allows you to enter and work in your nominated occupation with your approved sponsor for up to 4 years. In addition:
    • your employer must be an approved sponsor and nominate you for the position;
    • your approved sponsor must prove that an Australian citizen or permanent resident cannot fill the job; and
    • you must apply for and maintain relevant private health care insurance with an approved provider that covers you and your family if they are accompanying you for the duration of your visa in Australia.
