  • Animal welfare in the agricultural industry is governed by model codes of practice that have been developed in consultation with industry bodies, government and others in our community who care for the welfare of animals.
  • There are several codes of practice currently operating across Australia including codes relating to:
    • saleyards;
    • domestic poultry;
    • farmed buffalo;
    • farmed ostriches;
    • feral livestock;
    • husbandry of captive-bred emus;
    • intensive rabbit husbandry;
    • land transport of cattle, horses, pigs and poultry;
    • livestock and poultry at slaughtering establishments;
    • pigs, camels, goats, cattle and sheep; and
    • deer farming.
  • These codes of practice set out best practice recommendations for the treatment of animals in each element of the livestock and husbandry industries. Although it may not be an offence if animals are not kept precisely as specified in the code any reference to the codes in legislation or regulations makes such evidence admissible in proceedings for a related offence.
  • For more information or to read the model codes of practice contact the primary industries department in your state or territory.
