- The importation of exotic animals into Australia is controlled by laws administered by the Australian Federal Government.
- There are over 5,000 animals listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES). Animals listed as a CITES spices are heavily regulated in their movements around the world.
- All lizards, snakes and turtles are protected under the law and it is illegal to remove them from the wild.
- If you are in NSW you must obtain a licence from the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) to keep captive bred reptiles as pets.
- You need to check the relevant legislation in your state and territory as the rules are different in each jurisdiction.
