    5. Key Compliance Bodies
  • There are several compliance bodies in Australia involved in aviation compliance.
  • The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is the aviation body in charge of regulating safe air navigation in Australia.
    • CASA also oversees the operation of Australian aircraft outside of Australia according to international law and regulations.
    • CASA also plays a significant role in the aviation industry by implementing drug and alcohol management programs and testing.
    • They also issue certificates, licences, registrations and permits.
  • Airservices Australia (AA) is a government owned authority that is operated on a commercial basis. Because of its commercial nature it receives no funding from government revenue. AA’s main function is to provide services or facilities to the aviation industry for profit. In particular AA is responsible for:
    • providing services and facilities in a way that complements the provisions of the Chicago Convention;
    • overseeing the implementation of international agreements relating to the safety, regularity or efficiency of air navigation; and
    • promoting the civil aviation industry both in Australia and internationally.
  • The Australian Federal Police (AFP) play a key role in policing the aviation industry. Their role is to deter, prevent and respond to security and other criminal threats at the 9 major Australian airports. The AFP also investigates organised crime within this sector. It coordinates its efforts with those of the state and territory police forces and airport operation management in an attempt to safeguard aviation safety and security.
  • AFP airport commanders work to ensure that aviation security activities are effectively carried out. Canine (dog) teams work in conjunction with AFP airport operations to detect and deter threats to the aviation environment.
