- There are laws creating offences that may occur in relation to specific types of aircraft, navigational equipment, facilities and cargo.
- Certain offences are also prescribed by the general civil aviation laws in relation to matters involving air operations, licensing, international flights, aircraft crew and aircraft freight.
- Investigators are responsible for the monitoring and enforcement of the prohibitions against such offences.
- For example it is an offence for a person to hijack an aeroplane or to engage in violent conduct while on board a flight.
- The hijack of an aeroplane or other aircraft is deemed to have occurred when it is seized by force or through any act of intimidation.
- Hijacking an aircraft is regarded as a serious offence in Australia especially in circumstances where the aircraft would be considered to be in flight.
