    3. Injury Management
  • While employers may be focused on preventing incidents workplace injuries still occur.
  • Most employees that are injured or become sick at work will usually return to normal duties after receiving basic first aid or medical treatment.
  • If an injury is significant it may require extended periods off work and more significant medical attention or hospitalisation. For these types of injuries the employee will have to be managed through the company’s injury management program.
  • Injury management refers to a formal program to manage an employee’s injuries and their rehabilitation. The aim of the program is to facilitate recovery in order to allow for the employee to safely return to normal duties.
  • Employers should develop their own workplace rehabilitation policies and return-to-work (RTW) procedures.
  • In some states and territories it is a legislative requirement that employers have formal programs in place which must:
    • outline the company’s commitment to injury management and rehabilitation;
    • designate the necessary resources for the program; and
    • set out procedures to be observed in the event of a workplace injury.
  • In all states and territories employers are legally obliged to develop rehabilitation programs or provide for suitable duties for injured employees.
