  • In Australia students who successfully complete either a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor qualification are entitled to apply for admission to the legal profession in the jurisdiction in which they would like to practise.
  • Generally this means completing any additional requirements and making an application to the relevant board in the state or territory in which they graduated.
  • Australia has a national practising certificate scheme that provides for lawyers who are admitted in one state or territory to make an application to work in another state or territory.
  • Australian lawyers can also seek opportunities to practise law in another country. In order to do this the lawyer must meet the academic and accreditation requirements in that jurisdiction.
  • In some jurisdictions even where permission to practise has been granted there may be limitations on the title the lawyer can use or the matters they can undertake. If you have specific concerns you can use our free Find a Lawyer directory to contact a lawyer near you.
