I2. How a Lawyer Can Helpf you are an Australian qualified lawyer seeking to practise in a foreign country then a lawyer who specialises in that jurisdiction can advise you about your right to work in that country. There are often restrictions and additional academic requirements for foreign lawyers who wish to practise overseas. It is important to do your research thoroughly to ensure that you will be able to undertake work in the country to which you are moving. A lawyer can also assist in giving advice about potential work arrangements and any employment contracts you may be considering prior to your signing an offer.

If you are an overseas lawyer who wants to work here then an Australian lawyer can advise you about being admitted to practice in the state in which you plan to live.

If you require the assistance of an overseas lawyer to act on your behalf in a foreign country an Australian lawyer will be able to provide you with assistance in:

  • locating a lawyer in the foreign country;
  • communicating with the lawyer;
  • obtaining certified translations of documents if necessary; and
  • providing you with access to interpreters.

An Australian lawyer can become a point of contact with the overseas lawyer and assist in:

  • explaining the work that is being done in the foreign jurisdiction;
  • answering any questions about process; and
  • providing you with information about the law in that country.

An Australian lawyer can also assist in dealing with Australian or foreign government authorities if that becomes necessary.
