A2. How a Lawyer Can Helpll people with a disability have the right to legal representation and to have their rights and wishes legally respected. Lawyers can help people with a disability learn more about their rights and assist them with decision making to ensure that they are achieving the best legal and personal outcome.

Sometimes it will be necessary to appoint a friend or guardian to assist the person with a disability to participate in legal matters as well as to help organise their financial affairs and living arrangements. A lawyer can develop the necessary documents for these arrangements to be put in place while also protecting your independence.

A lawyer can ensure that the persons' access to legal remedies is fair and equitable and meets their particular needs. They can also ensure that when a person with a disability is dealing with the criminal justice system they have appropriate access to a support person and that others understand the nature and effect of their disability.
