I want to try mediation, but there are domestic violence issues so I do not want to sit at the same table as my ex-partner. Can we still try mediation?

  • Yes you can. Special arrangements can be put in place so that you feel safe.
  • You can have a special mediation which is called a ‘shuttle mediation’. In a shuttle mediation the mediator will speak to both parties separately and carry messages between you. You will not have to be in the same room as your ex-partner at any time.
  • You should discuss your concerns with your lawyer and your mediator.
  • Your mediator should make sure you know you can also have a support person with you and a lawyer to represent you if that is what you want and if that will help you to feel more secure.
  • If you do not have a lawyer and would like some legal support you can use our Fixed-Fee Quote service to call for tenders from lawyers who are supportive of mediation and who may be able to assist you with this.
