    3. Jurisdiction - Federal
  • The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) is not always the first forum for seeking review of an administrative decision at a Federal or Commonwealth level.
  • In many cases the primary decision must undergo an internal review by the relevant decision maker or an intermediate specialist tribunal before the AAT can consider it.
  • For instance a review of a social security decision can only be made by the AAT after that decision has been internally reviewed by Centrelink or the Department of Human Services and then by the Social Security Appeals Tribunal.
  • In order to determine if the AAT has jurisdiction (authority) to hear your matter you must first establish that you have exhausted all the necessary preliminary steps.
