- There are many situations when you may need to make a general maritime claim.
- Under Australian law you are entitled to proceed with a general maritime claim in the event that:
- your ship is damaged in any way such as by another vessel colliding with your ship;
- you have suffered personal injury or loss of life (a claim brought by your estate) as a result of a ship or its equipment being defective;
- you have suffered personal injury or loss of life as a result of an act or omission of a ship owner, charterer or a person in command of a ship;
- your goods carried by a vessel have been lost or damaged;
- you have a claim relating to either salvage of life or ship freight (the right to a reward for saving people or property);
- you have a claim concerning the construction, repair or fitting out of your vessel even if your vessel has not yet been launched; or
- you have a claim in respect of wages as a crew member.
