    5. After Separation
  • Once you and your partner have separated you will need to make a lot of decisions.
  • You will need to make practical decisions about your:
    • children;
    • finances including weekly income and expenses;
    • assets and liabilities; and
    • living arrangements.
  • It is a good idea to write a list of all the things that need to be resolved and try to deal with them one by one. Coming to an agreement with your ex-partner may be difficult as emotions can run high. Firstly attend to all the things that do not require agreement from the other person.
  • If you are having trouble communicating or reaching agreement about some or all of these issues then you may need to go to a specialist mediator known as a family dispute resolution practitioner or see a lawyer. Our free Find a Lawyer directory may help you get in touch with an experienced family law lawyer near you.
