    3. End of a Relationship
  • If your relationship ends there are a number of things you need to do.
  • Steps need to be taken whether you are separating from a de-facto relationship, from a marriage or divorcing.
  • You will need to address the following:
    • make a note of the date of separation;
    • make short term and long term arrangements for the care of your children; and
    • divide your property and finances.
  • The law requires you to ensure arrangements are in place for the immediate care of your children. This is called a short-term arrangement.
  • You also need to ensure arrangements are in place for the care of your children in the long term.
  • All assets and liabilities need to be divided up between you and your ex-partner.
    • There are a number of ways you can do this and it is a good idea to get legal advice to ensure you fully understand your rights.
    • See our guides on Property Settlements  and Binding Financial Agreements which are covered as separate topics.

These are all big decisions that need to be made at a difficult time. Reach out for support from family and friends, counsellors or mediators to assist you. A lawyer can help you better understand your legal rights, obligations and the process involved. Our free Find a Lawyer directory may help put you in touch with the assistance you need
