In addition to having in-house legal counsel a company may also need to access external lawyers and law firms. This may occur when there is a large amount of legal work, a specialist lawyer is required for a particular transaction or the in-house counsel is unavailable.
In-house counsel may benefit from the assistance of external counsel in particularly complex areas of law as in-house counsel are generalists and may lack the expertise that an external lawyer can provide.
