    3. ADF Member Representation
  • Offences and penalties under the Defence Force Discipline Act 1982 (Cth) are complex and you will need the expertise of a military lawyer who is very knowledgeable in military service and culture and who will tailor their advice to your particular circumstances. Organisations that give legal assistance include:
  • The Australian Army Legal Corps (AALC):
    • The AALC are military lawyers who provide specific legal advice to commanders on such matters as international law and administrative law and general legal advice to other serving members of the ADF from all ranks.
  • The Directorate of Defence Counsel Services (DDCS):
    • The DDCS provides legal representation to people facing court martial or trial under the DFDA. It also secures and organises witnesses on behalf of the accused.
    • The DDCS have a list of available legal officers that can assist ADF members who are accused of service offences under the DFDA.
    • They provide legal representation for ADF members facing inquiries.
  • Defence Legal:
    • Defence Legal provides legal advice and representation to ADF members on all aspects of law and the management of legal affairs.
    • Some legal officers also serve in overseas deployments and postings. For more information on Defence Legal visit their website at www.defence.gov.au
