    7. On the Spot Fines
  • If you are issued with an on the spot fine you need to check that the details of the offence written on the notice are correct, exactly what the penalty is and what the date for payment is.
  • There are different options: -
    • If you committed the offence then make sure you either pay by that date or contact the relevant Authority (written on the notice) if you need an extension.  Penalties will apply for late payments. Usually you can apply to go on a ‘payment plan’ to pay the fine in instalments over time.
    • If you wish to have the matter dealt with in court then you will need to look on the back of the notice to see exactly what steps you need to take to have the matter dealt with in court.
    • If you do not agree with the fine and think you may have a legal defence then you should speak to a lawyer as soon as possible. You can use our free Find a Lawyer directory to get in contact with a lawyer near you.
  • One way or the other you need to sort out payment. Do not ignore it and hope it will go away.  Additional penalties can often apply if you do not pay your fines. In some jurisdictions non-payment of fines can lead to you having your license suspended. This can have very serious consequences for your work and family life.
