    7. Additional Registrations
  • There are a number of additional registrations that should be considered after a company is registered.

A) The newly registered company will need to apply for a Tax File Number (TFN).

  • Your personal TFN cannot be used because a company is a separate legal entity.
  • The company will pay tax separately from you and its other office holders and employees.

B) You should consider registering a business name for your company.

  • If you intend to conduct your business under your own personal name then you will not need to register a separate business name.
  • When operating your business through a company you must also ensure that the type of company is evident. A proprietary company must use the word 'proprietary' or the shortened version 'pty' in its name.
  • It must also be possible to ascertain whether the liability of the company members is limited or unlimited. Companies where members have limited liability will use the term 'limited' or the shortened version 'ltd'.

C) You may wish to consider registering a trade mark.

  • Registering a trade mark is different to registering a business name. Registration of a business name does not provide you with any rights or protections in relation to that name.
  • Registering your chosen name as a trademark will assist you to legally protect your business and prevent other people or organisations from trading with it or imitating it. This will enable you to protect your brand as your business grows over time.
  • See our Trademarks topic for more information.
