What law governs commissions and inquiries?

  • There is federal law and each state and territory has their own law that sets out the rules for commissions and inquiries. The key acts that are important are:
    • Commonwealth: Royal Commissions Act 1902;
    • NSW: Royal Commissions Act 1923;
    • Victoria: Evidence (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1958;
    • Queensland: Commissions of Inquiry Act 1950;
    • Western Australia: Royal Commissions Act 1968;
    • South Australia: Royal Commissions Act 1917; and
    • Tasmania: Commission of Inquiry Act 1995.
