I want to make an internal complaint about my local government body. What can I do?

  • You should first speak to your local government or council to explain what the problem is and try to resolve it informally.
  • If your problem is not resolved you should send a formal written complaint to the Chief Executive Officer of the local government body.
  • Make sure you include the following:
    • a summary of key dates and events that relate to the problem;
    • the decision or action taken by the local government body that you have an issue with;
    • reasons why you think the local government body’s decision or action is wrong; and
    • what your ideal outcome would be.
  • Make sure you include copies of all relevant documents including emails, letters and any other proof of contact that was made with the local government body and anyone else involved in the issue.
  • If you have any other questions about your application you can use our free and anonymous Ask a Lawyer service.
