  • Tasmania charges stamp duty on property transfers according to a series of value range thresholds.
  • The “dutiable value” of the property is either the price you paid for the property or its unencumbered value depending on which amount is higher. In certain situations the amount paid including any GST will be considered to reflect the unencumbered value of the property. The unencumbered value refers to the value of the land without any debt or financial liability such as a mortgage.
  • Tasmania does not offer any stamp duty concessions for first home buyers or for pensioners.
  • Some exemptions may be accessible if the property is to be used for charitable, educational or religious purposes. There may also be exemptions for transfers between marriage partners or other significant relationships providing certain conditions are met.
