    7. General tips
  • A coronial inquest is held in a courtroom and is run before a judicial officer.
  • Each jurisdiction has different rules about who can be appointed as a coroner. For example in Victoria the State Coroner must be a judge from the County Court and other coroners are usually magistrates or lawyers who have been practicing for more than 5 years.
  • Often former magistrates are appointed as coroners.
  • You need to dress appropriately and speak respectfully to the coroner as you would in any courtroom.
  • You can ask the coroner’s assistant as many questions as you need to.
  • Remember that the aim of the inquest is to provide clarity around the circumstances of the death and to try to prevent future deaths.
