- Age discrimination can be of great concern to older Australians. Age discrimination occurs when a person is treated less favourably than another person in a particular situation because of their age.
- Older people may experience age discrimination when:
- a younger person is considered more favourably for a job because of their age;
- a older person is refused entry into a disco due to their age;
- a doctor or dentist refuses to supply services due to the person’s age; or
- an older person is made redundant at their workplace and a younger person is subsequently hired in the same position.
- If you believe you have been discriminated against because of your age you can make a complaint in writing to the Australian Human Right Commission. It does not cost any money to make the complaint.
- The law protects people from being discriminated against and if you feel that you have been subject to discrimination you should speak to a lawyer as soon as possible to discuss your options.
