9. Financial Ombudsman Service

- The financial ombudsman service provides independent dispute resolution between consumers and member financial institutions.
- All financial institutions are able to apply for membership to the financial ombudsman service.
- The ombudsman can assist with settling disputes on a range of banking and finance services including:
- credit cards;
- loans;
- financial planning services; and
- managed funds.
- The ombudsman service is free for the consumer. As a member the financial institute will cover the cost of the service.
- If you choose to use the service you can have a solicitor represent you however you will need to pay their fees.

- To access the service you must first attempt to resolve the dispute with the bank using their internal dispute resolution process.
- If you are still unhappy with the outcome you can seek assistance from the financial ombudsman service.
- They can provide a conciliation service where they work with the two parties to seek a mutually agreeable outcome.
They may also investigate the complaint and deliver a written decision that will be binding on the financial service if the consumer agrees.
