- There are two main categories of lawyers:
- general practice lawyers; and
- accredited specialist lawyers.
- You should look at retaining a general practice lawyer if you have a 'run of the mill' dispute or another similar type of routine legal matter.
- General practice lawyers can give advice on most of these types of legal matters.
- General practice lawyers should let you know if they do not have the experience, skills and knowledge needed to adequately run your case for you.
- General practice lawyers can refer you to specialist lawyers who can deal with your matter.
- On the other hand a complex legal matter such as an intellectual property issue may require the expertise of an accredited specialist lawyer.
- You should be aware that because accredited specialist lawyers are experts in a specific legal discipline their fees are generally higher.
- However the extra fees may be worthwhile if the specialist is very knowledgeable and experienced.
