A lawyer can assist you before you enter into a binding insurance contract by:
- explaining your obligations under the contract;
- explaining what is covered under the contract;
- establishing whether the contract is suitable for you; and
- reviewing a signed contract within the ‘cooling off’ period. This is the period after signing the contract during which you may cancel it.
A lawyer can assist you in a dispute with an insurance provider by:
- assisting you in applying for an internal review by the insurer;
- negotiating with the insurer on your behalf;
- assisting you in making a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS);
- advising you of your options for taking the matter to court;
- representing you in any court hearing; and
assisting in enforcing a decision made against the insurer by the FOS or a court.
