What can I do if my pet has been injured by another animal?

My neighbour's dog is always roaming around the street and causing trouble. While I was walking my dog this morning it attacked my dog and its leg is bleeding. I cannot prove that it was this particular dog. What can I do?

  • Under the Companion Animals Act 1998 (NSW) or your equivalent state or territory law you can seek compensation if your animal has been injured by a dog. The compensation should cover any veterinary bills and medication required as a result of the injury.
  • First and foremost you should take your pet to a veterinarian (vet) if you believe it needs medical care. The vet will be able to make a record of the damage and note that it was the result of an attack.
  • The next step is to discuss the issue with your neighbour. They may be willing to pay for the vet fees without having to get the law involved. If they are unwilling to compensate you then you should seek the services of a lawyer to obtain the amount owed.
  • You will also want your neighbour to take action to prevent this happening again. If they are unwilling to cooperate you may need to notify your local council so that they can take enforcement action.
