What can I do about an abandoned vehicle in my street?

I live on a quiet court and there is a vehicle half way down the road that I think has been abandoned. It's starting to rust and I am worried about the neighbourhood kids playing near it. What can I do?

  • You can report the details of a vehicle left unattended on a public road to your local council.
  • It is an offence to abandon a vehicle under the Impounding Act 1993 (NSW) and under equivalent legislation in most states and territories. Your council will be able to make enquiries to find out the name and address of the registered owner of the vehicle and can issue a notice.
  • If the impounding officer cannot locate the registered owner or the owner does not do what they are told by the council the local council has the power to impound or destroy the vehicle.
