What role does the International Maritime Organization (IMO) play in maritime activity?

As the captain of a domestic ship in Australia is there any reason I would need to get involved with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)?

  • If you are only operating your ship within Australian domestic waters there is probably no reason to be involved with the IMO.
  • The IMO is the United Nations (UN) agency responsible for establishing and maintaining vessel safety standards on the international front.
  • Australia is a keen participant in the IMO. Active engagement with the international community provides us with the opportunity to work with other nations so that international vessel safety standards have an increased chance of being complied with.
