What role does the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) play?

I want to get more information about the law to do to with maritime safety in Australia but I don't want to have to pay to see a lawyer at this point. Is the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) able to give me more information about the law and how it applies to me?

  • Yes. AMSA is able to provide you with more information about maritime law and regulations in Australia. AMSA is primarily involved with:
    • developing laws and regulations in regard to the seaworthiness and crew member competency of international ships and domestic vessels;
    • the enforcement of shipping practices and procedures that are environmentally safe especially in reef environments such as the Great Barrier Reef; and
    • fine-tuning effective rescue operations for maritime industry stakeholders.
  • You may want to visit the AMSA website at https://www.amsa.gov.au/ to make some initial enquiries.
