·         This will depend on whether your vehicle is new or used.

·         For new vehicles the duty is calculated using the full value of the vehicle.

·         For used vehicles the duty is calculated using the sale price or market value. The sale price is the price you will pay for the vehicle whereas market value is the price that the vehicle is expected to obtain on the open market. The market value of a vehicle is often preferred because the sale price does not necessarily reflect the vehicles real value such as if the vehicle is a gift, a prize or has been bought cheaply and repaired before being registered.
