What happens if an incorrect amount is listed on my tax return?

I received a letter from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) saying that the incorrect amount of interest was included in my income tax return. How did this happen and what should I do?

The ATO has a data matching process for certain items in income tax returns and sometimes there can be differences with amounts that are disclosed by taxpayers.
You will need to confirm the amount of interest disclosed in your tax return and the difference with the amount advised by the ATO with your financial institution.
Depending on what you have been advised in your letter the ATO will usually allow a certain amount of time for you to respond. They may then amend your income tax return and issue you with a new assessment and tax payable.
If you confirm that the interest amount advised by the ATO is not correct and that the financial institution made an error in the information then this can be communicated to the ATO by the financial institution.
