I am going overseas to practise law but want to maintain my practising certificate whilst I am away. What can I do?

I hold an Australian practising certificate to practise law in Australia. I was recently offered an opportunity to work as a lawyer in London. It is only a 1 year contract and I want to retain my Australian practising certificate in order to resume work on my return. What can I do?

  • The requirements vary between the states and territories so it is important that you contact the relevant professional body that has issued the practising certificate to discuss the requirements with them.
  • In general Australian lawyers practising overseas while maintaining their practising certificate will still need to:
    • advise of changes to their circumstances;
    • adhere to the conditions on their practising certificate;
    • complete any professional education requirements; and
    • maintain high levels of professional conduct and ethics during their work.
