How can I obtain permission to practise in Australia?

I recently came to Australia from Singapore. I hold legal qualifications from Singapore and have 12 years experience working as a lawyer. I want to practise law in Australia. How can I obtain permission?

  • If you are only going to be practising the law of Singapore you may need to register as a foreign lawyer with the law society of the state or territory in which you will be based.
  • If you wish to practise Australian law you will need to be admitted to practice in the state or territory in which you intend to work.
  • You can begin this process by visiting the website of the relevant law society or institute in your state or territory.
