I’m considering transitioning from private practice to in-house counsel. What are some advantages and disadvantages to this?

  • Advantages may include:
  • being part of a business team;
  • developing a specialist knowledge of a particular industry;
  • developing broad business related skills such as compliance, health and safety, employment, corporate governance, intellectual property and more; and
  • not being bound by law firm billable hours.
  • Disadvantages may include:
  • more limited work such as just gaining experience in the particular business of the company;
  • the more complex work may be outsourced to external lawyers;
  • the salary is generally not as high as big law firms;
  • hours are likely to be the same as private practice; and
  • there is likely less administrative and secretarial support than a law firm.
