I’m considering transitioning from private practice to in-house counsel. What are some advantages and disadvantages to this?

- being part of a business team;
- developing a specialist knowledge of a particular industry;
- developing broad business related skills such as compliance, health and safety, employment, corporate governance, intellectual property and more; and
- not being bound by law firm billable hours.
- Disadvantages may include:
- more limited work such as just gaining experience in the particular business of the company;
- the more complex work may be outsourced to external lawyers;
- the salary is generally not as high as big law firms;
- hours are likely to be the same as private practice; and
- there is likely less administrative and secretarial support than a law firm.
