Is my in-house counsel required to undertake further training and education?

I understand that private practice lawyers must undertake continual training and education to maintain their practicing license. Is this the same with in-house legal counsel?

  • In most states and territories the answer is yes.
  • In NSW for example solicitors who maintain a legal practising certificate must meet certain annual requirements in relation to continuing legal education. These requirements may be satisfied by attending relevant seminars and courses provided by external companies and law firms.
  • Seminars are also provided by professional bodies that your in-house counsel may be a member of.
