I have recently transitioned from private practice to in-house counsel. While in private practice I participated in a number of pro bono activities through my law firm and I’m wondering whether this is an option for in-house counsel too?

- Pro bono work is not only beneficial to society but also to the lawyer undertaking it as it is considered interesting and fulfilling work.
- Law firms and companies often encourage their lawyers to participate in pro bono activities in order to maintain the interest and spirits of their lawyers.
- If your in-house team doesn’t already have a pro bono programme you should approach the CEO and General Counsel to suggest starting one.
- Companies can work with community legal centres or law firms to participate in pro bono programmes.
- You can check out the National Pro Bono Resource Centre website for more details. They have a page dedicated to pro bono work by in-house lawyers: http://www.nationalprobono.org.au/page.asp?from=8&id=313.
