What is a needs assessment?

My claim has just been agreed to by the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) and I have to have a needs assessment done. What is involved in a needs assessment and why do I need one?

  • The DVA will carry out a needs assessment after accepting liability of your claim for an injury or disease. The needs assessment comprehensively evaluates your current situation and needs and is designed to ensure you receive all the compensation and rehabilitation services you reasonably require.
  • The key elements that will be considered as areas of possible need are:
    • medical treatment;
    • incapacity payments;
    • rehabilitation needs;
    • permanent impairment assessment;
    • mobility assistance; and
    • assistance with household activities including the provision of aids and appliances.
  • A second needs assessment may be undertaken down the track if your circumstances change or for some other reason. Future needs assessments may focus on specific areas of need only.
  • The DVA can advise you about what your specific needs assessment will involve.
