Am I entitled to household services and what does it cover?

How can I find out if I will be able to get household services? Prior to my time in the service I lived at home alone and did everything myself. I can barely do anything now. I'm worried that every day will be a struggle and I won't have the assistance that I really need.

  • Household services will be provided to meet any of your reasonable needs if you have an incapacitating medical condition accepted under Comcare scheme or the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation scheme.
  • The household services will be directed at minimising the impact of your injury, disease or illness on your ability to perform pre-injury tasks.
  • Generally an occupational therapist will undertake a professional assessment to determine what kind of services you need. It is possible that you will also need attendant care assistance.
  • Household services cover day-to-day activities such as cleaning, cooking, laundry, ironing, lawn mowing and gardening. Requests for similar services might be accepted.
  • General home maintenance services are less likely to fall under the care provided and will not be considered by the DVA. These exclusions include things such as painting, decorating, repairs, plumbing and electrical work. You would need to hire a contractor to perform these tasks for you and it would not be covered by the DVA.
