I’m a student interested in refugees and their treatment in Australia. Can you please tell me more about the detention facilities that Australia uses for asylum seekers?

- In Australia detainees may be accommodated in one of four types of immigration detention facilities.
- In addition they may be housed in community based arrangements including the Community Detention Programme or living in the community under a Bridging Visa E.
- The four types of immigration detention facilities are:
1. Immigration detention centres:
- this is the strictest type of immigration detention facility;
- these facilities are for people who have come to Australia without a valid visa, overstayed their visa or are in breach of visa conditions.
2. Immigration residential housing:
- these facilities are more flexible than immigration detention centres;
- detainees can cook their own meals and manage their households;
- detainees receive more freedom and are able to partake in community events and go to the shops.
3. Immigration transit accommodation:
- these facilities are intended for detainees whose immigration matter is likely to be resolved quickly;
- the accommodation is similar to a 'hostel';
- activities, programs and recreational facilities are provided.
4. Alternative places of detention:
- these facilities are for detainees who are considered to be of minimal risk to the community;
- these facilities are used to house families, children and ill detainees;
- this accommodation may be rented housing in the community or hotel rooms.
