How should I act at my protection visa interview with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection?

I have an interview next week and I’m wondering how I should act. My English isn’t great and I’m worried about using an interpreter.

  • Honesty is the best policy. You should answer all questions truthfully.
  • The interviewer will be looking for any differences between what you stated in your application and what you are saying in person.
  • Make sure your story is consistent.
  • This can be difficult when you are nervous and if you do not speak English well.
  • If you are using a Migration Agent or interpreter make sure they are giving the correct message to the Department both at application stage and interview stage.
  • Sometimes information is recorded incorrectly in the visa application and this can cause major problems as it will not be consistent with what you say in your interview.
