Can I work on a Student visa?

I’m currently enrolled at University and studying full time. Can I work part-time while I am on a Student visa?

  • Yes. With your Student visa you can normally work up to 20 hours a week. However in most circumstances you cannot work until your actual course starts. The 20 hours a week limit does not include any work experience criteria that is required from your course of study. While you are on your course break you can work freely without any hourly limits.
  • If you are on the Postgraduate Research Student visa (subclass 574) such as a masters or doctorate you do not have an hourly cap per week so you may work for as many hours as you wish.
