Do I need a solicitor to write a will if I don't have many assets?

I want to write a will so that I can give my things to my brothers and sisters when I die. Do I have to ask a solicitor to help me with this?

  • It is not always necessary to make a will. If your property is not particularly valuable but is more sentimental in nature then you may not need a formal will. Sometimes a letter to your family telling them who you want your things to be given to is enough.
  • However if your property is more valuable it is recommended that you hire a lawyer to make your will so that you get it right. If you don't write the will correctly according to the law then the court may not be sure how to carry out your wishes after your death.
  • If your family situation is complex it can also be a good idea to use a solicitor to draft your will.
